Step One: Wedge the clay to remove air bubbles and create an even, workable texture. This helps prevent cracking and makes the clay easier to throw.

Step Two: Firmly throw the clay onto the center of the wheel. With the wheel spinning and hands steady, use water to reduce friction and cone the clay up and down several times to fully center it.

Step Three: Press your thumbs into the center to open the clay, leaving enough thickness at the bottom. Widen the opening, then slowly pull the walls upward in smooth, even motions until you reach your desired height and thickness.

Step Four: Shape the clay into your desired form—such as a mug, vase, or cup—by gently guiding the sides. Smooth the surface with your hands or a wooden tool, trim excess clay from the base, and clean up the rim before removing it from the wheel.
